I took a trip to the Railway Museum, at Thirlmere, about an hour's drive from Wollongong. Here are a few photos.

Al, you hit on a favorite of mine!! Love old trains BIG ones and model railroads. I still have my first Lionel train given to me on my first Christmas. Several of my Uncles all worked on the railroad.

Check out these trains at work in the winter.

Caddy, My camera is simply a Panasonic Lumix. I set it on Intelligent Auto, and off I go. Of course. with the wonders of digital cameras, you didn't see all the 'not-so-good' shots that I took, lol.

Chevy, those videos are amazing. We have nothing like that in Oz, obviously.

Here is another one you might like, it's of the Zig Zag railway, near Lithgow, NSW. For many years it was the only way for the trains to get over the Great Dividing Range between Sydney and the Western plains.

You might like this one, too, Chevy. One of my favourite locomotives.

P.S. This is my most favourite movie of all time. If you are a train buff you won't be able to watch this without the hairs on the back of your neck standing up at some time or other, lol. It's a day in the life of 3801, probably Australia's most popular loco. The quality of the video is a little poor momentarily, but it doesn't detract from the film.
All aboard, turn the sound up, and let's go!

Al, My Uncles told me many stories of the railroad back in the day. The Engineer had to know his stuff and just what steam pressures should be to handle the loads they carried. The Fireman would shovel the coal and refill the water tank and knew what heavy work was. A switchman would handle switching tracks for the off loading cars onto sidings. The Brakeman would work the brake wheel on top of the car to stop it on the siding before it hit anything. When the crews were in between stops they would walk the tops of the cars to get to the Caboose where they would fix meals, eat and sleep. The bathroom would empty onto the tracks. When he retired it was almost all electronic (switching, GPS etc) they had 2 man crews and about every 7 mins the engineer has to hit a dead-man switch or the train comes to a stop. Kinda boring. The biggest fear they had was all the crazy drivers trying to beat the crossing gates and they would hit them. Trains with 100+ cars won’t stop real fast. He could hardly wait to retire.

P.S. I use a Kodak Z740 Digital.

Here is a 5 part History of railroads that’s been on our TV.
