I spent a little time today looking through screenshots I'd taken from the cam, of Al's Backyard Birds.

I also found this photo taken by Al on April 4/5th and posted in chat back then. I thought how magnificent this male Satin Bowerbird looked, and said so in the chatroom, at the time.

It wasn't until Apr 22/23, just over a week ago, that we noticed an 'impaled' male bowerbird at Al’s birdbath

Then the penny dropped! The Satin Bowerbird with the protruding stick we had noticed last year had not been a female, but a juvenile male, who has now moulted and is showing us his magnificent shiny blue/black plumage. He really seems to be thriving.

What an incredible story! And to think this bird returns to Al's around the same time yearly!

If you remember, this is the 'female' we first saw on cam on April 5, 2017:

and the last time 'she' was seen on cam on Oct 24 17:

The budgies had a visitor this evening - actually there were two more, off cam.

It was lovely to see the 'impaled' Satin Bowerbird visiting Al's feeder late yesterday afternoon. He loved the pear.

It looks as though he might have lost part of whatever was protruding from his front, but the angle made it difficult to tell for sure.

He seems to be thriving! :)

The male Satin Bowerbird (stick bird) was back again this morning. This time he showed us that the stick is definitely shorter where it protrudes through his neck/breast.

Love the new cam view - video is very clear. Amazing closeups of our favourite birds!

Here is 'Mr Stick' (and friend waiting) enjoying an apple - and looking superb!

More shots of Mr. Stick, tucking into that apple:

Shortly after Mr Stick left, the Lewin's Honeyeater came back for his turn

But the approach of the scarlet-backed Aussiebird startled him, so he left!
